About Bondi Life Saving

Bondi Surf Bathers Life Saving Club has been patrolling Australia’s beautiful Bondi Beach since 1907 and is officially recognised as the first surf club in Australia. The club is an Australian icon and holds an important and indelible position in Australian history.

It was on 21 February 1907 that a small group gathered at the Royal Hotel on the corner of Bondi Road and Denham Street Bondi to discuss the formation of a surf lifesaving organisation on Bondi Beach. We salute these pioneers, and the many members who have followed them, for their vision and courage in service.

Today, the club has more than 1,500 current members and 374 of these are proficient, active lifesavers. We thank these members for their many hours of community service, spent down on Bondi Beach, patrolling the surf from October to April. Last year the club completed 14,858 patrol hours and rescued 410 people from the surf.
